Experience Belo sur Mer from Morondava
Overview
Belo sur Mer, a few hours south of Morondava, is perhaps one of the most interesting and authentic coastal villages in western Madagascar.
Unlike the better-known destinations of the region, Belo sur Mer remains a working fishing port where daily life revolves around the sea, the tides and traditions that have endured for generations. The village is particularly famous for its traditional dhow-building yards, where large wooden sailing vessels are still built entirely by hand using techniques passed down from father to son.
Belo offers much more than beaches and fishing boats. The excursion also takes you through the vast salt plains surrounding the village, where seawater is transformed into brilliant white salt under the intense western Madagascar sun. Combined with village life, fishing culture and remote coastal scenery, it provides a fascinating glimpse into a side of Madagascar few travelers ever experience.
The Experience
Departure takes place at approximately 5:00 AM from Morondava.
The route heads south along sandy tracks winding through dry forests, baobab landscapes and remote Vezo villages. The journey itself is very much part of the experience, offering a rare opportunity to discover a region that remains largely untouched by tourism.
Arrival in Belo sur Mer is usually after approximately 4 to 5 hours of driving.
The day begins with a visit to the village’s famous dhow-building yards. Some of these traditional wooden sailing vessels exceed twenty metres in length and are constructed entirely by hand without modern machinery. Depending on the stage of construction, visitors may observe craftsmen shaping timber, assembling hulls or working on the framework of future boats destined to sail Madagascar’s western coastline.
The excursion then continues to the nearby salt plains. Salt production remains largely traditional, with vast geometric evaporation ponds stretching across the landscape. Besides offering excellent photographic opportunities, the visit provides insight into one of the region’s most important economic activities.
Lunch is served in a local restaurant before enjoying free time to wander through the village, watch fishermen returning with their catch or simply relax by the shoreline.
Departure from Belo sur Mer is scheduled around 3:00 PM, with arrival back in Morondava during the early evening.
Why Choose This Experience
Belo sur Mer offers something completely different from Madagascar’s national parks and classic beach destinations.
Rather than focusing on wildlife or resorts, this excursion immerses visitors in the daily life of a traditional coastal community. Dhow building, salt production, fishing culture and remote landscapes combine to create one of the most authentic experiences available from Morondava.

Nosy Andrahovo Sandbanks
Complete your Belo sur Mer experience with an excursion to the beautiful Nosy Andrahovo sandbanks.
Rather than a true island, Nosy Andrahovo consists of a series of pristine white sandbanks emerging from shallow turquoise waters. Depending on the tides, these sand formations create spectacular landscapes surrounded by crystal-clear lagoons and endless views of the Mozambique Channel.
From June to September, humpback whales migrate along Madagascar’s western coastline. During outings to Nosy Andrahovo, it is sometimes possible to spot whales offshore as they travel through these waters, adding an unforgettable wildlife experience to the excursion.
It is one of the most beautiful coastal outings available around Belo sur Mer and an ideal addition for travelers looking to combine culture, fishing villages and exceptional seaside scenery.
Supplement: €85 per person
Kirindy Mitea National Park Extension
For travelers wishing to explore one of Madagascar’s least-visited national parks, it is possible to add an extra night in Belo sur Mer and visit the nearby Kirindy Mitea National Park.
Accessible from Belo sur Mer, Kirindy Mitea protects a unique combination of dry forests, baobabs, coastal dunes, mangroves and remote beaches. Wildlife includes several lemur species, reptiles, endemic birds and some of the most untouched landscapes in western Madagascar.
Boat transfers to the park often follow the coastline, and from June to September, humpback whales can occasionally be observed offshore during the journey, making the experience even more memorable.
Extra Night at Ecolodge du Menabe
Another option is to add an additional night at Ecolodge du Menabe before or after the excursion.
The supplement includes accommodation, dinner and breakfast on a half-board basis, allowing a more relaxed pace and additional time to enjoy the Morondava region.
