Ifaty

Overview

Located about 40 km north of Toliara, Ifaty has become the liveliest beach destination in southern Madagascar. Together with nearby Mangily, the area stretches along a dry coastal strip lined with fishermen villages, beach lodges, restaurants and small bars where people usually end up staying longer than planned. The atmosphere here is very different from more isolated places like Anakao or Ambatomilo. Less remote. More movement. More people around in the evenings.

The beaches themselves are pleasant rather than spectacular. The lagoon is shallow and protected by coral reefs offshore, but the coastline around Ifaty is not as striking as the beaches farther north or south. What makes the area popular is mostly the combination of easy access, relaxed atmosphere and activities nearby.

There’s a wide range of accommodation, from very simple beach bungalows to comfortable hotels with swimming pools and seafood restaurants facing the lagoon. Backpackers, families, divers, overlanders and local travelers all mix together here, especially during weekends and holidays. Some evenings the beach restaurants become surprisingly lively with music, grilled fish smoke and groups drinking local rum while fishermen pull pirogues onto the sand after sunset.

The two best known excursions are probably Reniala Reserve and Honko Mangrove Reserve. Reniala protects a section of dry spiny forest filled with baobabs, endemic plants and birds adapted to the harsh southwest climate. Early morning visits are usually best before the heat becomes heavy. Honko offers a completely different environment with mangroves, wooden walkways and Vezo communities living between sea and lagoon.

The coral reef also attracts visitors for snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing excursions. Conditions depend heavily on wind and tide. Some afternoons the lagoon becomes almost flat. Other days strong wind pushes sand through restaurant terraces and turns the sea grey-green.

Ifaty works well for travelers looking for a few active beach days without complete isolation. You still get Vezo fishing life, seafood and sunsets over the Mozambique Channel, but with easier logistics, more hotels and more things happening around you.
