Anjozorobe Day Trip
Overview
After leaving Antananarivo before dawn, the road heads north toward one of the last remaining high plateau forests still left in Madagascar. Hidden away from the classic tourist routes, the Anjozorobe-Angavo Protected Area offers a much quieter and more intimate rainforest experience compared to the better-known parks of eastern Madagascar.
The drive passes through rolling highland landscapes, eucalyptus forests and sleepy rural villages before finally reaching the misty forests of Anjozorobe, a biodiversity sanctuary known for its sacred forests, peaceful atmosphere and the chance to observe the rare Indri Indri in a far less crowded environment.
For travelers searching for something more authentic and off the beaten path while still accessible in a single day from Antananarivo, this excursion is easily one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in the central highlands.
The Experience
Departure takes place very early in the morning from Antananarivo. The road north slowly leaves behind the busy atmosphere of the capital and enters a quieter landscape of hills, rice fields and forests typical of Madagascar’s central plateau.
Upon arrival in the Anjozorobe-Angavo Protected Area, the walk begins through humid forest corridors filled with moss-covered trees, ferns and endemic vegetation. The atmosphere here feels completely different from many other parks in Madagascar. The forest is calmer, less visited and deeply connected to local traditions and spiritual beliefs.
The reserve protects one of the last important forest corridors linking several ecosystems of the high plateau and shelters remarkable biodiversity.
The main highlight of the excursion is the search for the famous Indri Indri, locally known as babakoto. Hearing its deep calls echoing through the misty forest is often one of the most memorable moments of the day. In some parts of the forest, sightings can actually be easier than in more famous parks thanks to the lower canopy and quieter environment.
It is also possible to encounter the beautiful Diademed Sifaka, together with chameleons, endemic birds, frogs and many plant species unique to Madagascar’s central forests.
The guides also explain the sacred importance of the forest for local communities, including traditional beliefs and conservation practices still respected today.
After the walk, return toward Antananarivo in the late afternoon.
Why Choose This Excursion
Unlike the busier parks around Madagascar, Anjozorobe still feels remote and relatively untouched. The atmosphere in the forest is quieter, more intimate and deeply connected to local traditions.
This excursion is ideal for travelers searching for a more authentic wildlife experience away from large tourist groups while still remaining accessible in a single day from Antananarivo.
The combination of sacred forests, endemic wildlife and beautiful high plateau scenery makes Anjozorobe one of the most underrated day trips in Madagascar.

The best period generally runs from April to November during the drier season when trails are easier and rainfall less frequent.
Between June and September, temperatures are cooler and walking conditions particularly pleasant in the forest.
Because of the altitude and humidity, weather conditions can change quickly throughout the day.
During the rainy season between December and March, the forest becomes greener and more dramatic, although trails may become muddy and slippery.
