Madagascar in February

Cyclone Season & Quiet Shores

February is the peak of the wet season and carries the highest risk of cyclones. It is a month for flexible travelers who prioritize empty beaches, dramatic moody skies, and lush, uncrowded landscapes over guaranteed sunshine. Route selection is critical.

What works well

  • Nosy Be Archipelago: Generally the safest and driest option, offering excellent diving and empty beaches.
  • Far North: Diego Suarez and Amber Mountain can work well if monitored closely, offering misty, atmospheric rainforest hikes.

What can be difficult

  • East Coast: Sainte Marie and the Pangalanes Canal are highly susceptible to cyclones and heavy, persistent rains.
  • RN7 Route: Accessible but very wet; hiking trails in Isalo and Ranomafana will be muddy and slippery.

Usually not recommended

  • Tsingy de Bemaraha: Completely closed and dangerous during the wet season.
  • Deep South & West: Remote tracks are often impassable due to flooded rivers and deep mud.
