Amber Mountain National Park Day Trip

Amber Mountain National Park Day Trip

Overview

Rising above the dry landscapes of northern Madagascar, Amber Mountain National Park feels like a completely different world. Hidden among extinct volcanoes, crater lakes and deep valleys, this lush mountain rainforest is one of the most biodiverse protected areas on the island.

Located just south of Joffreville, the former colonial retreat overlooking Antsiranana Bay, the park reaches elevations of more than 1,400 meters and shelters an extraordinary variety of wildlife, waterfalls and endemic plants. The contrast between the dry savannas surrounding the massif and the cool tropical forest found inside the park makes this one of the most surprising excursions in northern Madagascar.

Ideal for nature lovers, hikers, photographers and birdwatchers, this day trip offers a refreshing escape from the coastal heat while discovering one of Madagascar’s most beautiful national parks.

The Experience

Departure takes place around 7:00 AM from your hotel in Diego Suarez (Antsiranana). The drive to Joffreville takes approximately one hour, gradually climbing from the dry coastal landscapes into cooler mountain scenery.

Before entering the park, there is time to discover the peaceful village of Joffreville, originally established as a retreat for French colonial officers escaping the heat of the coast. On clear days, spectacular views stretch across Antsiranana Bay and the Mozambique Channel.

Upon arrival at Amber Mountain National Park, the guided hike begins through a fascinating mosaic of ecosystems. The trails pass through dense rainforest, giant tree ferns, volcanic formations and streams hidden beneath thick vegetation.

The park is particularly famous for its wildlife. Several species of lemurs can be observed, together with colorful birds, frogs and some of Madagascar’s most remarkable chameleons, including tiny species that blend perfectly into the forest floor.

The walk usually lasts between four and five hours and can be adapted according to fitness levels and interests. Along the route, visitors often discover beautiful waterfalls, volcanic lakes and viewpoints overlooking the surrounding landscapes.

After the visit, return to Joffreville for lunch before driving back to Diego Suarez in the afternoon.

Why Choose This Excursion

Amber Mountain offers one of the greatest contrasts in Madagascar. Within a short drive from the dry northern coast, visitors enter a cool tropical forest filled with waterfalls, volcanic landscapes and endemic wildlife.
