Manakara to Mananjary

Manakara to Mananjary

Overview

This section of the Pangalanes Canal is probably the wildest, least maintained and most remote stretch along Madagascar’s east coast. Navigation is not always guaranteed here. Some parts become too shallow for the pirogues, making short walks necessary, while other sections almost disappear beneath vegetation or sand near the Indian Ocean coastline.

That is exactly what makes this journey special. Far from the usual tourist routes, the expedition reaches isolated villages accessible only by water and where foreign visitors remain extremely rare. The pace depends on water levels, the canal itself and daily conditions.

There are two ways to experience the Pangalanes Canal:

3 Days by Traditional Pirogue

  • Day 1: ManakaraAmbohitrabo | around 8 hours by pirogue
  • Day 2: AmbohitraboNamorona | around 8 hours by pirogue
  • Day 3: NamoronaMananjary | around 7 hours by pirogue

5 Days by Single Kayak (timing depend on the effort but it is usually 6/7 hrs per day)

  • Day 1: MananjaryMarohita
  • Day 2: MarohitaTampakala
  • Day 3: TampakalaMarofototra
  • Day 4: MarofototraAmbabona
  • Day 5: AmbabonaManakara

Navigation through isolated villages, wetlands, fishing areas, traveller’s palms, pandanus and giant “elephant ear” plants. Some sections also offer the chance to see the famous Nepenthes madagascariensis carnivorous plants.

Some sections may require walks beside the canal or along the Indian Ocean coastline when water levels are too low or when parts of the canal disappear beneath vegetation or sand.

How to Get There

Manakara, the starting point of the expedition, is located about 6 to 7 hours by road southeast of Ranomafana National Park. The adventure ends in Mananjary, approximately 4 hours east of Ranomafana through Madagascar’s humid coastal region.

When to Go

The best period is generally from May to November during the drier season. Water levels are usually more stable and navigation conditions better, although occasional rain remains possible year-round along the east coast.
