Day 1 — Antananarivo

Arrival at Ivato International Airport, welcome by our local team and transfer to your hotel in central Antananarivo. This first day is for relaxation and easy adaptation, allowing you to recover from your journey before heading into Malagasy island life. Overnight Havana Resort Hotel or similar.

Day 2 — Antananarivo – Antaniditra | 300 km – 8 h

After breakfast, head south along the RN7, a classic introduction to the Malagasy Highlands with red‑brick houses, terraced rice paddies and small farming villages. Stop at Ambatolampy, famous for family‑run factories hand‑casting traditional aluminium cookware. Around noon arrive in Antsirabe, the “city of water”. Enjoy lunch and a rickshaw ride, then visit Tsara Sabotsy Market and Antsena Kely, and enter workshops where silk, semi‑precious stones and zebu horn are turned into artisanal pieces. Continue south through Ambositra, known for Zafimaniry‑style woodcarving, then leave the main road and trail through hills and rice paddies to the secluded village of Antaniditra. Overnight Ivato River Lodge Hotel.

Day 3 — Antaniditra → Antoetra & Zafimaniry villages trek | 15 km by car + 20 km trek

Transfer by car to Antoetra, then hike with a local Zafimaniry guide to admire some of the most beautiful villages of the region. These settlements, refuge of the Zafimaniry master woodcarvers during the time of Ranavalona, have their craftsmanship listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Your guide explains how the region was once blanketed with valuable hardwoods like rosewood and ebony, how slash‑and‑burn farming has affected the forest, and what reforestation measures are in place. From Antoetra, walk through a typical Zafimaniry landscape to reach Faliarivo, perched on a rocky promontory. Spend the night in a basic village house in either Faliarivo or Sakaivo, sharing a traditional meal and daily life with your hosts. Income from your stay goes directly to the community.

Day 4 — Sakaivo – Antoetra – Antaniditra | 15 km trek – 15 km by car

Walk through green rice fields and sculpted terraces to reach the village of Sakaivo. After a polite visit and hearing from the village chief, climb a steep path to a viewpoint (around 1,000 steps), gaining a real sense of how people depend on the land. After another three hours of walking, return to Antoetra and drive back to Antaniditra, reflecting on the cultural experiences and scenery of the previous days. Overnight Ivato River Lodge Hotel.

Day 5 — Antaniditra – Ranomafana | ± 150 km – 5 h

After breakfast, head towards Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar's flagship conservation sites. The road winds up to 1,500 m with views over a changing patchwork of fields, forest and villages. Reach Ranomafana in the early afternoon. If time allows, take a half‑day excursion to a nearby village to learn how communities live alongside a protected area and how market‑based conservation supports livelihoods. Overnight Setam Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 6 — Ranomafana – Mananjary | via Sahambavy | 140 km – 4 h

Spend the morning in Ranomafana National Park, a lush rainforest at around 1,200 m covering nearly 40,000 ha. Accompanied by a park‑accredited local guide, follow established trails to spot lemurs, orchids and birds while learning about the long‑term research and conservation programs your park fees help sustain (approx. 4 hours). In the afternoon, drive east to Mananjary, a small town on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Overnight Jardin de la Mer Hotel or similar.

Days 7–8 — Mananjary – Ampasimanjeva – Pangalanes Canal | 120 km – 3 h + kayak

From Mananjary, head south to Ampasimanjeva and embark on a three‑day, low‑impact kayaking adventure along the Pangalanes Canal to Manakara. Glide along Madagascar's longest inland waterway, passing small hamlets where life is tied to fishing and small‑scale farming. Two nights are spent camping at quiet coastal spots: all waste is carried out, fires are limited or avoided, and local culture is respected. Remote areas are visited with local partners to ensure contributions are welcomed, culturally sensitive and directly beneficial to residents.

Day 9 — Manakara

Your canal voyage ends in Manakara, a town on the Indian Ocean where the Pangalanes Canal meets the sea and a historic railway runs alongside. The rest of the day is free to explore Manakara at your own pace, visit small local cafés and shops, or spend time on the beach. Overnight Antaimoro Hotel or similar.

Day 10 — Manakara – Ranomafana – Ambalavao | ± 310 km – 8 h

Drive back inland to the Highlands. Rejoin the RN7 and continue south to Ambalavao. En route, pass through Fianarantsoa, the cultural and intellectual centre of the southern Highlands, and stroll through its upper town of cobbled streets, colonial houses and artisan workshops. Arrive in Ambalavao, famous for papermaking and crafts, in the late afternoon. Overnight Betsileo Country Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 11 — Ambalavao – Ambohimahamasina | approx. 35 km – 2 h

A short scenic drive brings you to Ambohimahamasina, a village among wooded hills at the foot of Ambondrombe, considered by many Malagasy as the most sacred mountain in Madagascar. Choose a walking circuit led by local guides: village‑based cultural visits, an introduction to the spiritual importance of Ambondrombe, or nature‑focused trails through terraced fields, remnant primary forest and small hamlets. Overnight with a local family, enjoying a home‑cooked meal and discussing beliefs, agriculture and everyday life. The homestay provides fair, supplementary income and supports the preservation of traditional and natural heritage.

Day 12 — Ambohimahamasina – Tsaranoro Valley | approx. 110 km – 4 h

After breakfast, head south with a stop just outside Ambalavao at the community‑managed Anja Community Reserve. In this 12‑hectare pocket of granite outcrops and lush vegetation, a healthy population of ring‑tailed lemurs thrives. An hour‑long guided hike shows how tourism income is channelled into education, health and forest protection — one of Madagascar's most successful community‑led conservation projects. From there, take a sometimes bumpy but stunningly beautiful track into the Tsaranoro Valley, with its immense granite cliffs and rolling hills. Overnight at Tsarasoa Guest Lodge Hotel or similar, an ecolodge working closely with local villages.

Day 13 — Tsaranoro Valley

In the morning, hike to Chameleon Peak on a steep rocky trail that passes through small sacred forest and clear streams, opening onto panoramic views of granite walls and valley. Learn about local fady (taboos) that keep access respectful. Return to the lodge by early afternoon, then visit the neighbouring village of Morarano to meet residents, explore daily life and contribute to small local projects. Overnight Tsarasoa Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 14 — Tsaranoro Valley – Ranohira | 210 km – 5 h

Head towards Ranohira, the gateway village to Isalo National Park. Around midday, visit a Bara village — former cattle herders with strong ancestral traditions. Accompanied by a local Bara guide, learn about their history, rituals and today’s challenges, with a respectful approach that avoids romanticising sensitive topics. Overnight H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.

Day 15 — Isalo National Park

A full day exploring Isalo National Park, a magnificent sandstone massif of canyons, grasslands and green oases. Follow well‑used trails with a park‑accredited guide to viewpoints, natural pools (swim if conditions allow) and waterfalls. Good boots, sunscreen and water are essential. At sunset, reach the famous Window of Isalo, a natural rock arch framing one of Madagascar's most unforgettable sunsets, while your guide explains the park’s geology, wildlife and preservation. Overnight H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.

Day 16 — Ranohira – Ambositra | 420 km – 10 h

Leave Ranohira for a long but beautiful drive north. Landscapes gradually change from open southern plains to plantations as you approach Ambositra. Planned breaks allow you to relax, shop at roadside stalls and take in the varied scenery. (Optional extension with boutique coastal stays in the southwest is possible at additional cost.) Overnight in Ambositra.

Day 17 — Ambositra – Antananarivo | ~260 km – 8 h

This last road stage brings you back from Ambositra through the familiar Highlands scenery to Antananarivo. Arrive by late afternoon/early evening and check into a hotel near Ivato International Airport for an easy departure. Overnight Chat’o Park Hotel or similar.

Day 18 — Antananarivo – Departure

Private transfer to Ivato International Airport for your onward flight. You leave with lasting memories of Madagascar's breathtaking landscapes, endemic wildlife and welcoming people — and the knowledge that your journey has directly supported local communities and nature conservation.
