Madagascar in August

Whales, Wildlife & Perfect Travel Conditions

August is one of the finest months to explore Madagascar. Dry weather prevails across most of the island, wildlife viewing is excellent and road conditions are generally at their best. Humpback whales can still be observed around Sainte Marie, while the iconic landscapes of the Avenue of the Baobabs, Tsingy de Bemaraha and Isalo National Park enjoy clear skies and ideal temperatures.

What works well

  • Tsingy de Bemaraha & Avenue of the Baobabs: August offers crystal-clear skies, comfortable temperatures and some of the year’s best photography conditions.
  • Ifaty, Anakao & Ambatomilo: Warm sunny days, calm seas and excellent beach conditions along Madagascar’s southwest coast.
  • Andasibe & Ranomafana: Lemurs remain active, while cooler temperatures make rainforest hikes particularly enjoyable.

What can be difficult

  • Availability: August is one of the busiest months of the year. Popular destinations such as Andasibe, Morondava, Bekopaka and Sainte Marie often book out well in advance.

Usually not recommended

  • Booking late: August rewards travelers who plan ahead. Waiting until the last minute can mean reduced accommodation choices and fewer opportunities to secure the island’s most experienced drivers and guides.
