Itinerary

Day 1 – Antananarivo

Meet and assistance at Ivato International Airport according to your international flight schedule. Transfer to central Antananarivo, Madagascar's vibrant highland capital. Check-in at Havana Resort Hotel or similar. Afternoon at leisure to rest and acclimatize.

Day 2 – Antananarivo β†’ Ampefy | 120 km – approx. 3 hours

Departure west via RN1. Drive through typical villages of the Central Highlands, where terraced rice fields and traditional brick houses dot the landscape. Discover the ancient volcanic cones of the Itasy region, a serene area of crater lakes and rural tranquility. Arrival in the peaceful village of Ampefy. Day 3 – Ampefy β†’ Tsiroanomandidy | 130 km – approx. 3 hours

Morning visit to the Analavory geysers, a fascinating natural phenomenon where mineral-rich underground water erupts through limestone fissures. Continue west to Tsiroanomandidy, the last major town before the remote western regions. This bustling market hub offers a glimpse into rural Malagasy life and the famous zebu trade. Day 4 – Tsiroanomandidy β†’ Tsiafapapango | 120 km – approx. 7 hours

Drive toward the Bongolava massif, a semi-arid region famous for its weekly zebu markets and traditional Sakalava culture. The landscape shifts to dry hills, baobab-dotted savannas, and remote villages. Continue to Tsiafapapango and set up camp near a viewpoint overlooking the Ambatomalamba waterfall. Day 5 – Tsiafapapango β†’ Ankavandra | approx. 4–5 hours hiking

Early departure for a scenic hike across the dry hills of Bongolava. The trail offers panoramic views, encounters with local pastoralists, and opportunities to spot endemic birds and reptiles. Picnic lunch en route. Arrival in the village of Ankavandra in the afternoon, followed by an authentic immersion in local life. Overnight at a local guesthouse (Chez Nouredine).

Day 6 – Ankavandra β†’ Manambolo River Descent

Board traditional dugout canoes to begin the unforgettable descent of the Manambolo River toward Bekopaka, navigating through a totally isolated area of dramatic gorges and pristine wilderness. Before departure, a traditional ritual is performed by local guides to ask for the ancestors' blessing and safe passage. Overnight: Riverside bivouac.

Days 7 & 8 – Manambolo River Descent

Two full days navigating the Manambolo River between arid hills, gallery forests, and deep limestone gorges. The river serves as the only access route for many remote villages, offering rare insights into traditional riverside life. Wildlife sightings may include Verreaux's sifakas, Madagascar fish eagles, kingfishers, and scenes of daily village life along the banks. Evenings spent camping under the stars. Overnight: Riverside bivouac.

Day 9 – Manambolo River β†’ Bekopaka

Approach the Bemaraha massif and navigate through the spectacular Manambolo gorges, home to ancient Vazimba tombs carved into the cliff faces. The limestone walls rise dramatically on either side as you paddle toward civilization. Arrival in Bekopaka early afternoon. Time to rest and prepare for the Tsingy exploration. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.

Day 10 – Bekopaka β†’ Grand Tsingy β†’ Bekopaka | 40 km – approx. 3 hours

Full-day guided visit of the Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Earth's most extraordinary geological wonders. Traverse suspension bridges above razor-sharp limestone pinnacles, explore caves and canyons, and observe endemic flora and fauna uniquely adapted to this harsh environment. Overnight at Olympe de Bemaraha Hotel or similar.

Day 11 – Bekopaka β†’ Morondava | 220 km – approx. 10 hours

Early departure for the return journey south. Cross the Manambolo and Tsiribihina rivers by local ferries, an adventure in itself. Lunch in the riverside town of Belo-sur-Tsiribihina. Continue to Morondava via the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, arriving in time to witness one of Africa's most photographed sunsets as ancient Grandidier's baobabs glow against the orange sky. Overnight at Kimony Resort or similar.

Day 12 – Morondava β†’ Antananarivo

Transfer to Morondava Airport for a domestic flight to Antananarivo. Upon arrival, transfer to a central hotel such as Havana Resort or similar. Afternoon at leisure in the capital.
