Sarodrano & St. Augustin

Overview

Many travelers arriving from Anakao reach Tulear early in the morning, often around 8:30 or 9:00 AM, while their flight to Antananarivo only departs later in the afternoon or evening.

Rather than spending hours waiting at the airport, sitting in town or paying for a hotel day-use room, this excursion is an excellent way to make the most of your final day in southwest Madagascar.

The experience combines the traditional Vezo fishing village of Saint-Augustin, the spectacular coastal cliffs overlooking the Mozambique Channel, the famous natural cave pools of Sarodrano and, when conditions are favorable, the opportunity to observe elegant pink flamingos in the shallow coastal lagoons.

With its combination of scenery, local culture and unique natural attractions, this is one of the most rewarding day trips around Tulear and a perfect way to end your stay in southern Madagascar.

The Experience

Departure takes place in the morning from your hotel in Tulear.

The first stop is Sarodrano, one of the most beautiful coastal areas south of Tulear.

The highlight of the morning is a visit to the famous natural cave pools, hidden among limestone formations and fed by crystal-clear underground springs. These refreshing pools can be enjoyed throughout the year and are one of the region’s most unique natural attractions.

Afterwards, there is time to explore Sarodrano village, a small coastal settlement where local life revolves around fishing and the sea.

The excursion then continues to the impressive coastal cliffs, offering spectacular views across the Mozambique Channel and the rugged southwest coastline.

The next stop is the traditional Vezo fishing village of Saint-Augustin, located where the Onilahy River flows into the sea. Colorful pirogues, fishermen returning from the ocean and beautiful scenery make it one of the most picturesque villages near Tulear.

Depending on the season and water levels, the nearby lagoons often attract groups of pink flamingos, creating excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.

A lunch break is planned at a local restaurant before returning to Tulear during the afternoon, with drop-off possible at your hotel or directly at the airport.
