Zafimaniry villages on electric Fat bike from Ambositra
Overview
There are approximately 100 Zafimaniry villages scattered across the forested highlands southeast of Ambositra, home to nearly 25,000 people. Some villages can still be reached by rough dirt roads, while others remain extremely isolated and preserve much of their traditional architecture, woodcarving culture and rural lifestyle.
Most travelers visiting the Zafimaniry region only reach Antoetra, Sakaivo, Faliarivo.,, Very few continue deeper into the remote villages hidden beyond the mountains and secondary pistes.
This one-day electric fat bike expedition offers a completely different experience.
A Unique One-Day Adventure from Ambositra
Using our electric fat e-bikes, we explore remote Zafimaniry areas rarely visited by travelers, Sahanato.
The ride begins early from Ambositra, following the road toward Imerina-Imady before leaving the main road near Ambohimatombo II. This region is locally famous for its production of toaka gasy, the traditional Malagasy rum, as well as extensive sugar cane cultivation covering the surrounding hills.
From there, the route becomes progressively wilder. Narrow dirt tracks cut through eucalyptus hills, rice terraces, isolated farms and remote mountain landscapes where vehicles are rarely seen. Along the way, we stop in other villages where traditional mud houses are still part of everyday life.
Electric Fat Bikes in the Zafimaniry Highlands
Although the bikes are electric, this is still a real adventure. The return route covers around 100 km through rough terrain, steep climbs and sections of difficult piste. Depending on rider weight and trail conditions, the bikes usually have a range of approximately 50 km before assistance becomes more limited.
Physical effort is required.
Expect mud during the rainy season, rocky sections, river crossings and long stretches far from any tourist infrastructure. By the end of the day, most riders are completely exhausted — but reaching villages where only a handful of travelers have ever been makes the experience exceptionally rewarding.
Why This Experience Is Different
Unlike the classic Zafimaniry trekking routes, this expedition reaches areas that remain largely untouched by tourism. Some villages still depend entirely on agriculture, wood carving and local trade routes connecting isolated mountain communities.
The journey is not about comfort or polished tourism. It is about reaching places that still feel genuinely remote.
