The Tsiribihina River is one of the great slow adventures of western Madagascar. For three days, the river becomes the only road. Villages appear along the banks, children wave from dugout canoes, zebus cross shallow water and huge cliffs slowly rise above the river as the landscape changes day after day.
Traveling by private chaland makes the experience quieter and more flexible. There is no group schedule, no rush and more freedom to stop along the river whenever the scenery becomes too beautiful to ignore. The journey is simple, authentic and deeply connected to the landscapes and people living along the Tsiribihina.
The descent generally starts after an overnight stay in Miandrivazo, gateway to the river expeditions of western Madagascar. From there, a transfer leads to Masiakampy, where the private chaland and crew await.
