The Experience

Early start from Antananarivo. About 30-45 minutes later (depending on traffic), arrive at Lemurs’ Park, a small-scale private reserve where different species of lemurs live freely in a natural protected park.

Ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, brown lemurs, Coquerel’s sifakas, bamboo lemurs, crowned lemurs and mongoose lemurs can all be seen on the guided visit.

This is not a national park – it’s relatively small. But Lemurs’ Park is a superbly simple place for excellent wildlife observations over very short walking distances, making it suitable for families, photographers, and travelers on a tight schedule.

Past the visiting point, the road continues west through rice fields, villages and rolling highland landscapes toward Analavory and the well-known Andranomandroatra geysers. A showcase of rising steam and geological deposits from the volcanic soil, these stunning geothermal features constitute one of the most unique natural sites within a few hours of Antananarivo.

The next stop is Ampefy, a sleepy town near lakes, volcanic hills and rivers. Lunch is at a local by-the-water restaurant, with free time to enjoy the views and surrounding volcanic countryside.

Depending on timing and weather conditions, stops can be made along the way for visits to traditional villages or viewpoints overlooking the highland scenery, before arriving back in Antananarivo around 7:00 PM.
