Itinerary

Day 1 — Antananarivo

Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport, you are welcomed by our local team and transferred to your hotel in central Antananarivo. This first day is devoted to rest and gentle acclimatization, giving you time to recover from your journey and begin to connect with daily life in Madagascar. Overnight at Havana Resort Hotel or similar.

Day 2 — Antananarivo – Antaniditra | approx. 300 km – 8 h

After breakfast, you drive south towards Antsirabe, along the RN7, a classic introduction to the Malagasy Highlands with red‑brick houses, terraced rice paddies and small farming villages. En route, stop in Ambatolampy, known for its small family‑run foundries that hand‑cast traditional aluminium cookware, providing vital income for local families.

Around noon you reach Antsirabe, the “city of water”, for lunch and a rickshaw tour with local drivers. This low‑impact way of exploring takes you through Tsara Sabotsy Market and Antsena Kely, and into small workshops where silk, semi‑precious stones and zebu horn are crafted into unique pieces.

Continuing south via Ambositra, renowned for Zafimaniry‑inspired woodcarving, you leave the main road to wind through hills and rice fields to the quiet village of Antaniditra. Overnight at Ivato River Lodge Hotel.

Day 3 — Antaniditra – Antoetra – Faliarivo – Sakaivo | 15 km by car – 20 km trek

A short drive takes you to Antoetra, where a local Zafimaniry guide leads you on foot through some of the most beautiful villages in the region. The Zafimaniry, masters of woodcarving and traditional architecture, took refuge here during the reign of Ranavalona; their craftsmanship has been listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2003.

Your guide explains how the area was once covered in precious hardwoods such as rosewood and ebony, how slash‑and‑burn cultivation has affected the forest, and how reforestation efforts are underway. Walking from Antoetra through typical Zafimaniry countryside, you reach Faliarivo, perched on a rocky promontory with a timeless atmosphere and a warm welcome from local residents.

You spend the night in a simple village house in Faliarivo or Sakaivo, sharing a traditional meal and everyday life with your hosts. Your stay provides direct, fair income to the community.

Day 4 — Sakaivo – Antoetra – Antaniditra | 15 km trek – 15 km by car

Today’s trek leads through lush rice fields and sculpted terraces to the village of Sakaivo. After a respectful visit and meeting with the village chief, you continue on a steep path to a panoramic viewpoint, climbing around 1,000 steps in about an hour.

From here you gain a powerful sense of how closely people’s livelihoods are tied to the land. A further three hours of walking take you back to Antoetra, then by vehicle to Antaniditra, reflecting on the cultural encounters and landscapes of the past days. Overnight at Ivato River Lodge Hotel.

Day 5 — Antaniditra – Ranomafana | approx. 150 km – 5 h

After breakfast, you continue towards Ranomafana National Park, one of Madagascar’s flagship conservation areas. The road becomes more winding as you climb towards 1,500 m, with wide views over a changing mosaic of fields, forest patches and villages.

Arrival in Ranomafana is expected in the early afternoon. Time allowing, you visit a nearby village to better understand how communities live alongside a protected area, and how tourism can support both livelihoods and conservation. Evening briefing about the park and low‑impact wildlife viewing. Overnight at Setam Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 6 — Ranomafana – Mananjary | via Sahambavy | approx. 140 km – 4 h

In the morning you explore Ranomafana National Park, a dense rainforest of about 40,000 ha at around 1,200 m altitude. With a park‑accredited local guide, you walk established trails (about 4 hours), looking for lemurs, orchids, and birds while learning about long‑term research and conservation programs your park fees help fund. In the afternoon, you follow a scenic road east towards Mananjary, a small coastal town on the Indian Ocean. Overnight at Jardin de la Mer Hotel.

Days 7–8 — Mananjary – Ampasimanjeva – Pangalanes Canal | 120 km – 3 h + kayak

From Mananjary you transfer south to Ampasimanjeva and begin a three‑day, low‑impact kayak journey along the Pangalanes Canal towards Manakara. Paddling quietly along Madagascar’s longest inland waterway, you pass small riverbank hamlets where people depend on fishing and small‑scale farming and where life still follows the rhythm of the water. You camp two nights at carefully chosen, peaceful waterfront spots, following leave‑no‑trace principles (all waste is carried out, fires are controlled or avoided, and local customs are respected). Visits to isolated communities are organized with local partners to ensure they are welcome, culturally sensitive, and beneficial to residents.

Day 9 — Manakara

Your canal expedition ends in Manakara, where the Pangalanes Canal meets the Indian Ocean and a railway famously runs down the town’s main street.  The rest of the day is free to explore Manakara at your own pace, support small local cafés and shops, or relax by the sea. Overnight at Antaimoro Hotel or similar.

Day 10 — Manakara – Ranomafana – Ambalavao | approx. 310 km – 8 h

Today you head back inland towards the Highlands. The scenic drive takes you back to the RN7, then south to Ambalavao. En route you stop in Fianarantsoa, the cultural and intellectual centre of the southern Highlands, to walk its upper town of cobbled streets, colonial houses and artisan workshops. Your visit helps encourage the preservation of this historic district.

By late afternoon you arrive in Ambalavao, known for traditional papermaking and crafts. Overnight at Betsileo Country Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 11 — Ambalavao – Ambohimahamasina | approx. 35 km – 2 h

A short, scenic drive leads to Ambohimahamasina, a village set amid forested hills beneath Ambondrombe, regarded by many Malagasies as the country’s most sacred mountain.

With a local guide you choose a walking circuit: village‑based cultural visits, an introduction to the spiritual importance of Ambondrombe, or nature‑focused trails through terraced fields, remnant primary forest and small hamlets.

You spend the night with a local family in Ambohimahamasina, sharing a home‑cooked meal and conversations about beliefs, agriculture and daily life. This homestay brings fair, additional income to the community and encourages the protection of their cultural and natural heritage.

Day 12 — Ambohimahamasina – Tsaranoro Valley | approx. 110 km – 4 h

Continuing south, you pause just beyond Ambalavao at Anja Community Reserve, a 12‑hectare protected area managed entirely by the local community. Among granite outcrops and lush vegetation lives a thriving population of ring‑tailed lemurs.

A short guided hike in Anja shows how tourism income is reinvested in education, health and forest protection—an inspiring example of community‑led conservation. You then follow a sometimes rough but very scenic track into the Tsaranoro Valley, with far‑reaching views of granite cliffs and rolling hills. Overnight at Tsarasoa Guest Lodge Hotel or similar, an ecolodge working closely with nearby villages.

Day 13 — Tsaranoro Valley

Today you explore the Tsaranoro Valley on foot. In the morning, you hike to Chameleon Peak on a steep and rocky trail that crosses a small sacred forest and clear streams, opening onto panoramic views of the granite walls and valley. Your guide explains local fady (taboos), ensuring that access remains respectful.

Returning to the lodge by early afternoon, you then visit the nearby village of Morarano to meet residents, learn about everyday life and support small local initiatives. Overnight at Tsarasoa Lodge Hotel or similar.

Day 14 — Tsaranoro Valley – Ranohira | approx. 210 km – 5 h

This morning you travel to Ranohira, village gateway to Isalo National Park. In the afternoon, you visit a village of the Bara people, traditionally cattle herders with strong ancestral customs.

With a local Bara guide you gain a nuanced understanding of their history, rituals and the challenges they face today, touching carefully on sensitive topics such as cattle theft (dahalo) without romanticising or stigmatising. Overnight at H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.

Day 15 — Ranohira – Isalo National Park

A full day is devoted to Isalo National Park, a sandstone massif of canyons, grasslands and green oases. With a park‑accredited guide you follow established trails to viewpoints, natural pools and waterfalls, with the option to swim where conditions allow. Good footwear, sun protection and plenty of water are essential.

Towards evening you reach the famous Window of Isalo, a natural rock arch framing one of Madagascar’s most memorable sunsets, while your guide shares insights into the park’s geology, wildlife and conservation. Overnight at H1 Isalo Hotel or similar.

Day 16 — Ranohira – Ambositra | approx. 420 km – 10 h

You begin the return journey towards the capital, leaving Ranohira for a long but scenic drive north. Landscapes gradually shift from the open southern plains back to the cultivated Highlands around Ambositra.

Planned stops allow you to stretch, support small roadside vendors and appreciate changing environments. For those wishing to add responsible beach time in the southwest, this itinerary can be extended to include carefully chosen coastal stays (optional). Overnight in Ambositra (hotel to be confirmed).

Day 17 — Ambositra – Antananarivo | approx. 260 km – 8 h

Your final overland stage takes you from Ambositra north through the familiar Highlands scenery back to Antananarivo. Arrival is expected by late afternoon. To simplify your departure, you stay at a hotel near Ivato International Airport. Overnight at Chat’o Park Hotel or similar.

Day 18 — Antananarivo – Departure

Private transfer to Ivato International Airport for your onward flight. Your journey through Madagascar ends with rich memories of its landscapes, wildlife and people, and the knowledge that your visit has helped support local communities and conservation efforts along the way.
