The Red Tsingy

The Red Tsingy are among the most unusual natural formations in Madagascar. Unlike the grey limestone tsingy of Bemaraha or Ankarana, these formations are made of laterite and red clay shaped by erosion into sharp pinnacles, fragile canyons and narrow towers that almost look sculpted by hand.

Located in the far north of Madagascar, near the village of Irodo, the site feels surprisingly isolated. The road itself is part of the experience. Dry riverbeds, dusty tracks, baobabs and small villages slowly replace the greener landscapes around Diego Suarez.

What makes the Red Tsingy special is their color. Depending on the light, the formations shift from deep orange to bright red, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon. After heavy rains, parts of the landscape can even change shape slightly from one season to another because the sandstone-like material is extremely fragile.

The visit itself is relatively short compared to other national parks in Madagascar, but the setting is impressive. Standing above the formations, surrounded by dry valleys and eroded cliffs, the landscape feels almost unreal in certain light conditions.

The Red Tsingy are often combined with a northern Madagascar itinerary including Ankarana National Park, Amber Mountain or the beaches around Ramena and the Emerald Sea.
