Kirindy Reserve and Baobabs Avenue Day Trip
Overview
Around three hours north of Morondava lies Kirindy Reserve, one of Madagascar’s best wildlife destinations and arguably the most reliable place in the country to search for the famous fossa, Madagascar’s largest predator.
Kirindy protects a unique dry deciduous forest ecosystem home to several species of lemurs, endemic birds, reptiles and some of Madagascar’s most remarkable wildlife. Unlike the dense rainforests found elsewhere on the island, Kirindy’s relatively open forest often allows for easier wildlife observation.
Combined with a sunset at the legendary Avenue of the Baobabs, this excursion offers one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences available from Morondava.
The Experience
Departure takes place around 5:00 AM from Morondava.
The journey north takes approximately 3 hours, crossing the dry landscapes, baobab country and remote villages that characterize western Madagascar.
Arrival at Kirindy Reserve during the morning for a guided walk of approximately 2 hours. This is generally one of the best times of day to search for the reserve’s most famous resident, the fossa, as well as brown lemurs, sifakas, giant jumping rats and numerous endemic bird species.
Following the visit, enjoy lunch and some free time at Kirindy Lodge, Relais du Kirindy, Akiba Lodge or another nearby restaurant.
In the early afternoon, departure for the return journey to Morondava.
The day concludes with a stop at the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs, where the giant trees are illuminated by the warm colours of sunset, creating one of Madagascar’s most famous landscapes.
Arrival back in Morondava shortly after sunset.
