Ankarana National Park and Red Tsingy Experience

Ankarana National Park and Red Tsingy Experience

Overview

Pick-up at your hotel in Antsiranana / Diego Suarez at 5:30 AM for an early departure south toward Mahamasina, gateway to Ankarana National Park. The drive takes roughly four hours depending on road conditions and short stops along the way. Northern Madagascar changes quickly outside Diego Suarez. Dry savanna, scattered baobabs, red laterite soil and patches of forest gradually replace the coastal atmosphere of the city.

Ankarana National Park is one of Madagascar’s most remarkable geological formations and one of the island’s richest dry forests for wildlife. The park is famous for its tsingy, vast limestone formations shaped over millions of years by rainwater slowly dissolving and carving the rock into sharp pinnacles, deep cracks, underground rivers and hidden caves. Unlike the Red Tsingy visited later in the day, these grey tsingy are ancient limestone formations, extremely compact and razor sharp, forming a chaotic mineral landscape that stretches across much of the massif.

After arrival in Mahamasina, the visit begins with a guided hike through the park. Trails pass through dry deciduous forest, narrow limestone corridors and caves hidden beneath the tsingy. In some sections, suspended bridges cross above deep crevices while enormous fig tree roots descend through the rock toward underground water sources below. The contrast between dense vegetation and exposed limestone gives Ankarana a harsh but fascinating atmosphere.

The reserve is also known for its wildlife. Crowned lemurs and Sanford’s brown lemurs are frequently seen near the trails while chameleons, geckos and endemic birds inhabit the forest surrounding the massif. The terrain remains relatively dry most of the year, although temperatures can become very hot around midday, especially inside the limestone formations where the rock reflects heat intensely.

After the hike and a short break near the park entrance, the return drive north begins toward the Irodo Valley to visit the famous Red Tsingy at the end of the afternoon, when the light becomes softer and the colors deepen considerably.

The Red Tsingy is completely different from Ankarana’s grey limestone formations. Here, erosion sculpted fragile red lateritic soil and sandstone into a series of thin spires, miniature canyons and sharp ridges that seem almost unreal against the surrounding dry landscape. These formations are relatively recent and continue to change every rainy season as water reshapes the exposed earth little by little. The site is smaller than Ankarana but visually striking, especially near sunset when the entire basin takes on deep orange and rust-red tones.

Unlike the massive limestone tsingy formed slowly over geological time, the Red Tsingy remains unstable and temporary in appearance, almost like a landscape still in the process of being created.

After the visit, return to Antsiranana / Diego Suarez in the evening, usually around 8:00 PM depending on road and traffic conditions.

This excursion combines two of northern Madagascar’s most unusual landscapes in a single day: the immense limestone labyrinths of Ankarana National Park and the fragile red formations of the Irodo Valley. A long but rewarding overland experience for travelers interested in geology, hiking, wildlife and the raw landscapes of northern Madagascar.

Prices from €160 per person based on 2 participants.

The excursion involves several hours of driving and around five hours of hiking in uneven terrain. Travelers looking for a slower pace can also choose the 2 days / 1 night option with an overnight stay at Relais Ankarana.

Make it a more relaxed experience, 2 days and 1 night for €120 per person more including accommodation at Relais Ankarana on half-board basis.

When to Go

The best period for this experience is generally from May to November during the dry season. Trails inside Ankarana are easier to access and road conditions are usually better. From December to April, heavy rains can make some sections muddy and increase travel times considerably, although the vegetation becomes greener and the landscapes more dramatic.

Activities

  • Guided hike inside Ankarana National Park
  • Exploration of caves, canyons and underground river systems
  • Crossing suspended bridges above the tsingy formations
  • Wildlife observation including lemurs, chameleons and endemic birds
  • Sunset visit to the Red Tsingy in the Irodo Valley
  • Scenic overland drive through northern Madagascar’s dry landscapes

Tips

Bring good walking shoes with solid grip as the limestone inside the tsingy can be sharp and slippery in certain areas.
Lightweight clothing, sun protection and enough water are highly recommended, especially during the dry season when temperatures rise quickly around midday.
The Red Tsingy is particularly beautiful late in the afternoon when the lowering sun intensifies the deep red and orange colors of the formations. Temperatures in the north remain warm year-round, especially inside the limestone areas where heat reflects strongly from the rock.
