Authentic Zafimaniry Experience: 3 Days Through Villages and Forest Trails
Overview
This three-day trek offers one of the most authentic cultural experiences in Madagascar, exploring the heart of the Zafimaniry region, a UNESCO-recognized cultural landscape famous for its wood-carving traditions, remote villages and spectacular mountain scenery.
Starting in Antoetra, the traditional gateway to Zafimaniry country, the trek follows ancient footpaths through rice terraces, forests and isolated villages before reaching Sakaivo, often considered one of the most authentic Zafimaniry villages still accessible to visitors.
Along the way, discover villages such as Faliarivo, Antetezandotra, Amboasary and the beautiful Ifanandrana Waterfall, while spending two nights immersed in traditional Zafimaniry life.
Day 1 – Antoetra to Sakaivo via Faliarivo and Antetezandotra
The adventure begins in Antoetra, the main village and cultural center of the Zafimaniry people.
Leaving the village behind, the trail descends through cultivated hillsides and terraced fields before reaching the small settlement of Faliarivo. Here, traditional wooden houses decorated with the geometric carvings for which the Zafimaniry are famous offer a first glimpse into a way of life that has changed little over generations.
The trek continues through forests, valleys and small agricultural hamlets toward Antetezandotra, another picturesque Zafimaniry village perched on the mountainside. The scenery alternates between rice terraces, eucalyptus groves and panoramic views across the surrounding valleys.
After a picnic lunch and time to explore the village, the walk continues toward Sakaivo, one of the most remote and authentic villages in the region.
Arrival is usually in the late afternoon. The evening is spent discovering village life, meeting local families and enjoying a traditional dinner before an overnight stay in a simple guesthouse or family home.
Walking time: approximately 5–7 hours
Overnight: Sakaivo
Day 2 – Ifanandrana Waterfall Excursion via Antetezandotra and Amboasary
After breakfast, departure for a full day exploring the countryside surrounding Sakaivo.
The trail first returns toward Antetezandotra before continuing through beautiful rural landscapes toward Amboasary. The route follows narrow footpaths used daily by local villagers, crossing streams, cultivated fields and patches of native vegetation.
The highlight of the day is the spectacular Ifanandrana Waterfall, hidden in a remote valley approximately 10 km from Sakaivo. Cascading through a lush forested setting, the waterfall provides one of the most scenic natural sites in the Zafimaniry region.
There is time to relax near the falls, enjoy a picnic lunch and explore the surrounding area before beginning the return trek.
Back in Sakaivo, the afternoon offers further opportunities to observe traditional woodworking techniques, interact with villagers and experience daily life in one of Madagascar’s most unique cultural communities.
Walking time: approximately 5–6 hours
Overnight: Sakaivo
Day 3 – Sakaivo to Antoetra
The final day begins with a last look at village life before leaving Sakaivo and retracing the ancient footpaths toward Antoetra.
The return journey offers a different perspective on the landscapes crossed on the first day. Terraced hills, forests, valleys and scattered Zafimaniry hamlets accompany the walk back toward the gateway village.
Along the way, there are opportunities for photographs, conversations with local villagers and final views over the mountain scenery that characterizes this remarkable region.
Arrival in Antoetra is generally expected around midday or early afternoon, marking the end of the trek.
Walking time: approximately 4–6 hours
