3-Day Nosy Hara Castaway Experience
Overview
The Nosy Hara Archipelago is one of Madagascar’s most remote and least-visited national parks. Located off the northwest coast of the island, it is made up of dozens of limestone islands, hidden beaches, turquoise waters and spectacular coastal scenery.
Unlike the more developed islands around Nosy Be, Nosy Hara has no hotels or permanent settlements. Visitors spend two nights camping on one of the islands while exploring the surrounding archipelago by boat.
This experience is perfect for travelers looking for crystal-clear waters, deserted beaches, island exploration and a genuine off-the-beaten-path adventure in northern Madagascar.
The Experience
Day 1 – Diego Suarez to Nosy Hara
Departure takes place around 6:00 AM from Diego Suarez.
The journey heads west toward the coastal village of Ampasindava, gateway to the Nosy Hara Archipelago. The drive takes approximately three hours through remote landscapes and small villages.
Upon arrival, equipment is loaded onto a small motorboat, usually the same type used by local fishermen.
The crossing to the archipelago takes approximately two hours, depending on sea conditions.
After reaching the island and setting up camp, there is time to relax, swim and explore the nearby coastline before dinner.
Camping overnight on the island.
Day 2 – Exploring the Archipelago
A full day dedicated to discovering the islands and islets of Nosy Hara National Park.
Depending on sea conditions, the excursion includes visits to several limestone islands, hidden beaches, sandbanks and viewpoints overlooking the Mozambique Channel.
The waters around Nosy Hara are exceptionally clear and ideal for swimming and enjoying the natural surroundings.
The archipelago is also known for its unique landscapes, combining dramatic limestone formations with pristine tropical beaches.
Dinner and second overnight camping on the island.
Day 3 – Sunrise Departure and Return to Diego Suarez
Departure takes place at sunrise to take advantage of the calmest sea conditions, before the winds usually strengthen later in the day.
The early crossing offers smooth navigation through the archipelago and beautiful views of the surrounding islands.
After approximately two hours, arrival back in Ampasindava, followed by the road transfer to Diego Suarez.
Arrival is generally expected around midday.
