Overview

This adventure tour in Madagascar takes you on an unforgettable journey from the lush green landscapes of the East to the striking red lands of the West. From Antananarivo, the capital perched on the High Plateaux, the journey begins towards Andasibe, a true nature sanctuary where humid forests shelter the famous Indri-Indri. The route then continues to Vatomandry and Mahanoro, where you will enjoy a peaceful cruise along the Pangalanes Canal, passing lakeside villages and authentic scenes of daily life.
Further south, the road leads to Ambohitsara and Mananjary, before entering the tropical rainforest of Ranomafana, one of Madagascar’s most emblematic national parks. Returning to the High Plateaux, discover Ambositra, capital of Zafimaniry craftsmanship, then Antsirabe and Miandrivazo, gateways to the dry regions of western Madagascar.

The adventure continues towards the majestic baobabs and the Kirindy Reserve, home of the mysterious fossa, before reaching Bekopaka and the spectacular Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The journey ends in Morondava, at sunset along the legendary Avenue of the Baobabs, an eternal symbol of Madagascar.

Itinerary

Day 1

Antananarivo

Arrival at Ivato International Airport and transfer to Antananarivo, the vibrant capital of Madagascar. This historic city, built on twelve hills, showcases rich royal heritage with the Rova of Antananarivo palace complex overlooking terraced rice fields. Explore cobbled streets, bustling markets like Analakely, and colonial architecture. The city blends Malagasy traditions with French influences. Hotel installation.

Day 2

Antananarivo → Andasibe

Early departure along RN2 (Route Nationale 2) through scenic highlands and rice paddies. Lunch in Moramanga, a charming market town. Afternoon visit to Mitsinjo Reserve, a community-led conservation area famous for chameleons, colorful frogs, exotic insects, and the iconic indri lemurs. Night guided walk in VOIMMA community reserve to observe nocturnal lemurs, mouse lemurs, chameleons, and reptiles in their natural habitat.

Day 3

Andasibe

Full day exploring Andasibe-Mantadia National Park (also known as Périnet), one of Madagascar's most accessible rainforests. Approximately 4-hour hike through primary rainforest to encounter the loud calls of indri (largest living lemur), diademed sifaka, bamboo lemur, endemic birds like the Madagascar serpent eagle, colorful chameleons, geckos, and rare orchids. Afternoon visit to Vakona Reserve (Lemur Island) to see black-and-white ruffed lemurs in a protected setting.

Day 4

Andasibe → Vatomandry

Morning exploration of Maromizaha Forest, a pristine rainforest corridor with exceptional biodiversity and fewer tourists. Scenic drive descending to the east coast through lush vegetation to reach Vatomandry, a small coastal port town framed by swaying coconut palms and long sandy beaches along the warm Indian Ocean. Experience the relaxed coastal atmosphere and traditional fishing villages.

Day 5

Vatomandry → Mahanoro

Full-day boat cruise along the legendary Pangalanes Canal, a 600km network of natural lakes, rivers, and man-made channels parallel to the coast. Observe traditional lakeside villages, colorful pirogues (dugout canoes), fishermen casting nets, women washing clothes, and unique coastal ecosystems. Lunch en route at a local village. Arrival in Mahanoro late afternoon, a gateway town to the canal system.

Day 6

Mahanoro → Ambohitsara

Continuation of navigation through the Pangalanes Canal, passing palm-lined landscapes, isolated fishing villages, and pristine beaches where the canal meets the Indian Ocean. Observe traditional boat-building techniques and daily life along this unique waterway. Arrival in Ambohitsara, a village noted for traditional pirogue construction and authentic canal/ocean lifestyle. Experience genuine Malagasy coastal culture away from tourist routes.

Day 7

Ambohitsara → Mananjary → Ranomafana

Short navigation to Mananjary, a historic port town with colonial architecture and the famous Antaimoro community. After lunch, begin the ascent to the High Plateaux, driving through changing landscapes from coastal plains to mountainous terrain. Journey to Ranomafana, meaning 'hot water', famous for its thermal springs, UNESCO-listed national park, and pristine humid rainforest teeming with endemic wildlife.

Day 8

Ranomafana → Ambositra

Morning visit to Ranomafana National Park, a 41,600-hectare rainforest reserve. Trek through diverse habitats to spot the rare golden bamboo lemur, red-bellied lemur, greater bamboo lemur, colorful amphibians, and endemic birds like the Madagascar red owl. Afterwards, drive to Ambositra, the capital of Zafimaniry craftsmanship, renowned for intricate woodcarving traditions recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Day 9

Ambositra → Antsirabe → Miandrivazo

Visit traditional Zafimaniry woodcarving workshops to observe artisans creating intricate geometric patterns without nails or metal. Drive to Antsirabe, meaning 'where there is much salt', known for its thermal springs, colonial architecture, and vibrant rickshaw culture (short rickshaw ride through the city). Continue westward toward Miandrivazo in the Menabe region, descending through dramatic landscapes to this riverside town on the Tsiribihina River.

Day 10

Miandrivazo → Kirindy

Drive west across the dry deciduous forests of western Madagascar toward the iconic Avenue of the Baobabs. Arrival in Kirindy in the afternoon, a private forest reserve managed for conservation and sustainable logging. Night visit to the reserve with spotlights to spot the elusive fossa (Madagascar's largest predator), nocturnal lemurs including fat-tailed dwarf lemurs, giant jumping rats, and various reptiles.

Day 11

Kirindy → Bekopaka

Early morning visit of Kirindy Reserve to observe diurnal lemurs like red-fronted brown lemurs and Verreaux's sifakas in the dry forest. Then drive to Bekopaka, the gateway to Tsingy de Bemaraha, including adventurous ferry crossings of the Tsiribihina River and Manambolo River through spectacular gorges. The journey showcases dramatic limestone formations and remote wilderness. Arrival late afternoon in this isolated outpost.

Day 12

Bekopaka – Tsingy de Bemaraha

Full day exploring Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring surreal limestone karst formations called 'tsingy' (meaning 'where one cannot walk barefoot'). Approximately 4-hour hike across suspension bridges, through narrow canyons, ancient caves, and panoramic viewpoints. Encounter decken's sifakas, lemurs, endemic birds, and unique flora adapted to the razor-sharp limestone pinnacles. One of Madagascar's most spectacular natural wonders.

Day 13

Bekopaka → Morondava

Return drive to Morondava, a coastal town on the Mozambique Channel, with a memorable sunset stop at the world-famous Avenue of the Baobabs, a highlight of the journey. This iconic dirt road lined with ancient, towering Adansonia grandidieri baobabs (some over 800 years old) creates one of the most photographed landscapes in Africa. Time to explore Morondava's fishing port and vibrant local market.

Day 14

Morondava → Antananarivo

Transfer to Morondava Airport for domestic flight back to Antananarivo, offering aerial views of Madagascar's diverse landscapes. Hotel installation and free time to explore the capital's remaining attractions, shop for souvenirs at La Digue artisan market, or visit the Tsimbazaza Zoo and botanical gardens. Enjoy a farewell dinner featuring Malagasy cuisine.

Day 15

Antananarivo — Departure

Transfer to Ivato International Airport according to your flight schedule. Final opportunity to purchase last-minute souvenirs like vanilla, spices, or handcrafted items. End of services and departure from Madagascar, the Red Island, with unforgettable memories of unique wildlife, stunning landscapes, and warm Malagasy hospitality.
