Located along Madagascar’s remote southwest coast, Salary Bay is one of the country’s most beautiful seaside escapes. White sand, crystal-clear turquoise water and a peaceful lagoon give the area a calm, almost untouched atmosphere. Compared to busier beach destinations, Salary feels quieter, wilder, and far more connected to the surrounding Vezo fishing communities.
The bay lies around 5 hours north of Toliara by 4×4, depending on road conditions. The journey follows sandy coastal tracks through dry landscapes dotted with baobabs, thorny forests, and small fishing villages. The road can be rough in places, but reaching Salary is part of the adventure.
The lagoon itself is spectacular. Calm shallow water stretches far from the shore during low tide, creating endless shades of blue throughout the day. The reef protects the bay from strong waves, making it ideal for swimming and relaxing. Sunsets here are particularly beautiful, with soft golden light reflecting across the water while traditional pirogues slowly return to the village.
Unlike larger resort areas, life in Salary Bay remains simple and slow. This is a destination mainly for travelers looking to disconnect: long beach walks, lazy afternoons, fresh seafood, and quiet evenings by the sea. If you are looking for nightlife or constant activities, the area may feel too calm after a couple of days.
One worthwhile excursion is visiting the nearby Mikea Forest, known for its dry forest ecosystem, baobabs, endemic birds and the semi-nomadic Mikea communities living in the region.
