Ampefy and Lemurs Park
Overview
This Ampefy day trip from Antananarivo combines some of the most interesting experiences near the Malagasy capital in a single day: lemurs, volcanic landscapes, geysers, lakes and rural highland scenery.
Perfect for travelers with limited time, this excursion departs at 7:30 AM from your hotel in Antananarivo and returns in the evening. The route heads west toward the volcanic region of Ampefy, with a first stop at the famous Lemurs’ Park, one of the easiest places near the capital to observe several lemur species up close.
The excursion then continues through the Malagasy countryside toward the geothermal area of Andranomandroatra, known for its natural geysers and volcanic landscapes, before reaching the peaceful lakeside village of Ampefy.
This is one of the best nature and wildlife day trips from Antananarivo, combining wildlife, landscapes and local culture without long overland travel.
The Experience
The day starts with an early departure from Antananarivo. About 30 minutes later (depending on traffic), arrival at Lemurs’ Park, a small private reserve where several lemur species live freely in a protected natural environment.
During the guided visit, it is possible to observe ring-tailed lemurs, black-and-white ruffed lemurs, brown lemurs, Coquerel’s sifakas, bamboo lemurs, crowned sifakas and mongoose lemurs.
Unlike larger national parks, Lemurs’ Park allows close and easy observation of wildlife within a short time, making it ideal for families, photographers and travelers on short stays.
After the visit, the road continues west through rice fields, villages and rolling highland landscapes toward Analavory and the famous Andranomandroatra geysers. These impressive geothermal formations create steam and mineral deposits rising from the volcanic ground, offering one of the most unusual natural sites near Antananarivo.
The journey then reaches Ampefy, a quiet village surrounded by lakes, volcanic hills and rivers. Free time is planned for lunch at a local restaurant by the water before enjoying the peaceful scenery and surrounding volcanic landscapes.
Depending on timing and weather, additional stops can be made along the road to admire traditional villages, viewpoints and highland scenery before returning to Antananarivo around 7:00 PM.
